I am currently contracting doing a Comms and Engagement for a Digital Security team. This means I’m having to write a lot. That can be challenging in an open office environment as there are a lot of distractions. People coming over chatting, that body printer in the corner, the random conversations more interesting than the thing you are doing.
So, after having purchased a decent set of headphones (JVC HA-S30BT) I have tried podcasts and all sorts to listen to raise my concentration levels, but you end up bobbing your head to music or distracted by interesting things being said in podcasts … but …
in a recent Smashing Security Podcast,Smashing Security Podcast there was a suggestion for a website (and app) called myNoise : https://mynoise.net/
OK .. hear me out (see what I did there) .. this is not your usual random rain noises etc, I have not found whale song at least … you can actually customise a lot of what you are listening to.
For sure, there are a lot of the downloads that are not free on the app, but I have been fine with the free ones. now I am completely addicted!
So let me start you off with one of the “SoundScapes” – how very 1980s prog rock !!
I am doing this off the Android app …
Find .. Spring Walk
- Find ‘Default’ in the middle
- Change to Weather Changing by scrolling on the word Default and press the tick bottom right
- Find Animate Bottom right – press the word
- Select Allegro and click the tick
The fact that it keeps changing the noise is really helpful as you don’t zone out of it and it keeps it present in your mind without being too distracting.
So there you go, hope someone finds it useful. Let me know any favourite ‘SoundScapes‘ you work out!!
But why do I need this? Well, I have tinnitus. For those who don’t suffer, imaging having a high pitched whistle … constant … very high … in one ear (mine’s my left ear). Silence really enhances that whistle, so I have to find something to help me focus through it. I might write a blog about my tinnitus at some point along with a list of podcasts I listen to on my commute.
Have a fab day all!
