NCSAM – National Cyber Security Awareness Month – Introduction

Welcome to my first post on National Security Awareness Month.

Yet another month and yet another thing to be aware of ! Give me a break !

Eye Roll

Well I know what it feels like, I get this on other months too, but please hear me out.

When you got up this morning, how long was it roughly before you used your first piece of technology? 10 minutes, 30 minutes an hour?

Since getting up this morning, how many times have you opened an app on your personal device … roughly? 10, 20, more ?

Behind each and every app there is someone who wrote the code, perhaps even a security team working to secure it too.

Oh and you know that coffee you bought from that large chain … them too …

Oh and that online purchase you hope arrives today … them too …

And the delivery drivers apps … and your Ring doorbell, and your Nest thermostat and your … well, you get the point.

Yes, this is you, whether you are some IT Super Guru or a complete and utterly new to the internet … we are all affected.

In fact, when you look around you the world is like a scene out of the Matrix with data flowing by you all the time. Kinda cool, but equally, kinda scary too for some.

Cyber Security Awareness Month is us, as an industry of security professionals, helping you to navigate that world a bit more safely.

Let me give you a great example…

Before you cross the road … what are we supposed to do?

  • Stop
  • Look
  • Listen
  • Think

Wow, remember that? Seems like ages ago yeah, but it kind of stuck didn’t it.

How about before you click links in emails there was a

  • Stop
  • Think
  • Before you Click the Link

(or something similar)

Maybe you wouldn’t be tempted by that Nigerian Prince with 75million to give you!

So look out for #NCSAM on Twitter or #BeCyberSmart … there might be other ones to look out for too.

The themes you’ll see are:

  • Own IT
  • Secure IT
  • Protect IT

If after this month all you have done is installed and used a Password Manager … that’ll do me. The world will be a bit safer for you!

Have a fab October ! See you on the other side !!
