Have you ever locked eyes with someone, knowing you’ve met them before, but their name just escapes you? It happens to me constantly — especially in busy environments. I’ve often wished for a tool that could instantly give me names and faces on the spot, making those awkward moments disappear. But is there a dark side of AI glasses?
The Tool I’ve Always Wanted
The dream has always been a technology that could bridge this gap, seamlessly helping me recall names and faces, enhancing how I connect with people.
Imagine a tool that could:
- Identify people in real-time
- Display their names instantly
- Show personal information, such as job titles or past interactions
- Remind me of tasks I may have forgotten, like following up with them
- Maybe where I met them last
It’s exactly the kind of tool I need — until you consider the deeper implications.
Someone Invented It
Recently, the I-XRAY project demonstrated the startling capabilities of AI glasses through a combination of facial recognition and large language models (LLMs).
The technology is impressive. I-XRAY’s ability to link facial data to vast databases like PimEyes and beyond. This takes privacy invasion to a whole new level!
The tool operates by pulling together:
- names,
- addresses,
- contact details,
- background,
- Social Security Number
- and so much more!
… simply by recognising someone’s face.
While the creators do not intend to release the tool, their work illustrates how capable current AI systems are and the tactics used by cybercriminals today. The creators, AnhPhu Nguyen and Caine Ardayfio, developed I-XRAY to raise awareness about privacy risks, showing how easily available data can be used to build detailed personal profiles without consent.

But…
The problem with such technology isn’t the tech itself — it’s the implications. The creators of I-XRAY acknowledge that while their invention solves a personal dilemma, it introduces profound privacy issues. With facial recognition tools and LLMs working together, it’s now possible to gather highly sensitive information about anyone walking down the street.
And this is the real problem: no meaningful consent. Most people have no idea their face is being scanned and linked to a wealth of personal data online.
The dark side of AI glasses is that a simple pair could reveal where you live or the names of your relatives just by looking at you. This raises serious concerns about surveillance, data security, and personal autonomy. The line between convenience and privacy has never been thinner.
Conclusion: Balancing Tech and Privacy
I-XRAY is a cautionary tale about the power of AI and the growing erosion of privacy. While the technology is undoubtedly impressive, it serves as a reminder that convenience can come at a heavy cost. As we look toward the future of AI-powered tools, it’s crucial that we have serious conversations about consent, data use, and the ethics of developing systems that can impact our fundamental rights.
